First, a review of The Book of Lost Things. I enjoyed it, mostly for its take on a few classic tales, and the fairy tale format of the main story itself. That said, if you're not already a fan of fairy tales and, especially, alternative fairy tales, then this is perhaps not the book for you. It's an interesting photo series, and well worth a look... but I find the artist's claim that she was never exposed to fairy tales as a child deeply suspicious. She grew up abroad and the photo series is clearly reacting primarily to Disney's interpretations of fairy tales... but I just find it hard ( Read more... )

So... Many years ago I scoffed at Disney's versions of fairy tales, and how they've ruined them by sanitizing them. Just a couple of years back when I really started making a study of fairy tales, however, I came to appreciate Disney's versions as legitimate permutations of the tales. Virginia is turning down my unemployment claim on the basis that I haven't worked in this state for two full quarters. Five plus months, but not two full quarters. Fail.
